Reiki is a Japanese word for universal life energy, where REI, in a spiritual context, means God’s wisdom or higher power and KI means life force energy.
Reiki is not a religion but a natural healing method that was created by Dr Mikao Usui, a medicine, psychology and religion scholar in the 1800s who, in a journey of spiritual self-discovery found his gift of healing and life purpose.
Reiki is now a well known healing modality where the practitioner channels energy into the client by means of touch or by holding their hands over certain points of a person’s body in order to activate the natural healing processes of the body and restore physical and emotional well-being. Clients remain fully clothed during a session. Reiki is a non-sexual form of healing.
Reiki is a gentle and safe method of healing that can be beneficial in reducing stress and aiding relaxation,
increasing energy, stimulating the immune system and relieving pain and symptoms of various health conditions.
A typical Reiki session involves the client lying down on their back on a massage table. The practitioner will ask them to relax and get comfortable. A blanket is offered to put over the client as during the session the client’s body temperature may change as the energy shifting process takes place and the client becomes relaxed. The client can close their eyes if they wish to in order to assist with relaxation.
The practitioner will play relaxing music softly on the background and will then place their hands over different
positions of their body, which would normally correspond to the organs and glands as well as the chakra centers. The practitioner’s hands are held stationary just above each position for as long as the practitioner feels necessary or intuitively guided to do so.
During a Reiki session the client may feel relaxed and may drift into sleep. This is perfectly normal. Reiki has no side effects as it is a gentle method of healing. However, some people will feel nothing but relaxed whereas others will feel body and/or emotional processes happen such as laughter or tears, coughing, sneezing and may feel cold or hot, etc. It depends on each individual as to what processes they experience if any at all.
An individual may not feel anything during a treatment. However, it does not mean that the treatment is not working or doing any benefit. Reiki will flow to wherever is needed the most for an individual, and body or emotional processes may be felt during treatment and/or days after a treatment has been received.
After the treatment is finished the client will gently open their eyes and start to awaken from their relaxed state or even sleep, until they are fully conscious again to go about the rest of their day. It is advisable to drink plenty of water straight after a treatment. People have been known to feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around them once they have had a treatment.
A typical session can take from 30 minutes to one hour and a half or more if needed. The amount of sessions required is different for everybody depending on the desired outcome for each individual and the initial reason for seeking treatment.
Distance healings are also offered. A recent photograph of the individual is normally required to conduct the healing.
Reiki workshops are offered on a one to one or group basis. Reiki is a simple healing technique to learn and is available to everyone regardless of their age, religion or cultural background.
Reiki is learned in a class environment with an attunement given by a Reiki Master, which enables the student to reach into the unlimited supply of life force energy in order to improve their own quality of life and help others should they wish to do so.
